  • FT | Huddersfield Giants Women 10-68 Wigan Warriors Women.

Georgia Wilson scored four tries and Rachel Thompson grabbed a hat-trick as Wigan Warriors Women thumped Huddersfield Giants 68-10 at Victoria Park on Sunday afternoon.

There were also tries on the day for Emily Stirzaker, Jade Gregory-Haselden, Anna Davies and a double for Vanessa Temple to make it three wins from three games in the Women’s Betfred Super League.

The Warriors started well pressing the Huddersfield line but it was the Giants who opened the scoring as Amelia Brown broke the line to race away and score under the uprights, the effort converted by Chloe Smith to put Huddersfield up 6-0 early on.

Becky Greenfield and Davies both had efforts at the goal line in the 12th minute, but Huddersfield held strong defensively to deny the Warriors their first score. Temple did register Wigan’s first however in the 16th minute, crossing the park on an individual run to touch down with Wilson adding the extras to level the scores.

Wigan took the lead for the first time in the 21st minute, captain Thompson darting through on her own and going over beneath the sticks, Wilson converting another for 12-6. Temple intercepted a Giants kick on the last to send Stirzaker over in the 25th minute and extending the Warriors lead further, Wilson making it three with the boot for 18-6.

Wilson went over for her first of the game just moments later, Greenfield putting her through the gap to race 50m and crash under the uprights again for an easily converted score and Wigan were out to 24-6. Thompson got a first half double, her chip over the top not dealt with by the Giants, collecting herself and crashing over in the 32nd minute, Wilson made it five from five with the extras for 30-6.

The Warriors wrapped up the first half with Gregory-Haselden going over for her first of the season, Lucy Baggaley feeding the ball to the number 23 to go in under the sticks once more, before Wilson raced away for her second of the afternoon, converting both to make it seven from seven with the boot and seeing the Warriors 42-6 to the good at the break.

The Warriors started the second half in good fashion, threatening the Giants defence once again but they held firm and were the first to cross in the second period, Annabel Loney going in at the corner, the conversion unsuccessful from Smith and the score was 42-10.

Wigan soon grabbed one back as Thompson completed her hat-trick on 52 minutes, cutting back inside to reach out and get the score, Wilson converting to make it 48-10. Wilson then completed her hat-trick in the 62nd minute, racing away on her own and going under the uprights, Thompson missing the conversion for 52-10 Wigan.

Davies got herself on the scoresheet just moments later, the pass fired across to the winger to go in at the corner and put Wigan to 56-10. Temple raced 40m for another individual effort and seal her brace, before Wilson ran 60m to get her fourth of the afternoon and round up proceedings, Greenfield adding the extras to confirm a 68-10 win for the Warriors.
