Wigan Warriors Women are pleased to announce three additions to their squad for the 2021 Betfred Women’s Super League with the signings of Lisa Campbell, Abby Eatock and Freya Hellin.
The Warriors have started the season well and will be boosted by their three new arrivals as they look to continue their good form in the league competition.
Born in New Zealand, the 35-year-old started her career in Rugby Union before playing Rugby League for Auckland Maori in the Pacific Cup at Carlaw Park at the age of 15. Campbell joined her first club Mt Wellington Warriors, where most of her family played or had played previously.
The utility forward then joined Richmond Roses where she grew her game and won the Premiership in her first year under the mentoring of Luisa Avaiki, Cynthia Ta’ala and Tea Lome. At just 16-years-old she was part of Auckland development before being selected for Auckland in 2008 and was then picked in the NZ Kiwiferns World Cup squad in the same year.
Campbell’s first taste for the international side came in the 2008 World Cup, with the NZ Kiwiferns crowned Winners in the same year. She was also part of the squad for the 2013 World Cup in which New Zealand came runners-up against Australia, where Lisa made the decision to stay in England.
Since then she has been playing Rugby Union for Normington Knights and Worcester Warriors, but now makes the switch back to Rugby League to join the Wigan Warriors Women.
Wigan-born Eatock spent her early years playing for Ince Rose Bridge from the age of four, before joining Wigan St Patricks and Wigan St Judes before leaving to join the army at 16-years-old.
She then spent two years out of the sport whilst undertaking her demanding Army training, before representing the Armed Forces in 2019, and winning the Challenge Shield. Her success for the Army sparked interest and Eatock was selected to play for Leeds Rhinos in 2019, where she cemented her pace on the league.
Eatock scored the Rhinos’ first try in the 2019 Women’s Grand Final, which they went on to win – earning the utility back a winners’ medal and selection for the England Performance Squad. We now welcome Eatock to her home-town Club and look forward to her contributions in competition this year.
A Rugby Union regular, Hellin started her career at the age of 18 representing Bristol Academy. Hellin then moved to the North West to study in Preston at UCLan, where she continued to play the sport as vice-captain of her University team and won the League and Cup Final in the same season. During her time at University, Hellin also represented Firwood Waterloo in the Rugby Union Premiership, where she played at hooker and flanker.
In 2018, Hellin had her first stint with the Warriors after being selected as part of the inaugural Wigan squad for the Women’s Super League and made her debut in the 54-0 win on the opening day of the season. She described this as a big change in game but an enjoyable learning curve throughout. Hellin was also selected by the Army to play against the RAF Rugby League in 2018.
The forward picked up an ACL injury in 2019 which forced her onto the sidelines for the best part of a year, before signing a contract with Sale Sharks in 2020 and making her debut against Gloucester. We look forward to having her back with the squad for the 2021 season.
