After working in partnership for over seven years, Wigan Warriors Community Foundation are continuing to deliver sessions to the children of St James’ CE Primary School as part of the PEPASS+ programme.

The Physical Education, Physical Activity and School Sport programme sees weekly activities created and delivered by the Community Foundation’s PE specialists to promote physical fitness.

With a range of sessions, the Community Foundation staff have improved academic performance and social skills of those children participating in the sessions – creating a lasting impact within the school and its community.

Community engagement officer, Tom Marsh, said: “Every week the Community Foundation run three after-school clubs that include football, fitness and rugby. The sessions target different skills needed to develop in the sport. The children in the clubs have a real competitive attitude and love to participate in the challenges that are set by the coaches.

Christina Ratcliffe, assistant headteacher at St James’, said: The after-school clubs that Wigan deliver are always fun and educational for the children. This has had a real impact on our community engagement within sport. Providing three after-school clubs a week has opened the door for the school to create a stronger link between ourselves and Wigan Warriors. The staff have gone above and beyond to put sessions together that we at school have shared with the parents and children at home to access during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Wigan Warriors Women captain delivering one of the sessions recently.

The PE and School Sport+ offer includes Primary Rugby League, Creative Arts, Health and Wellbeing, Teacher CPD and Extra-Curricular services.
