Smith: Make a statement

  • Harry Smith looks ahead to Wigan’s Betfred Super League tie against Castleford Tigers.
  • Smith: “No one person can stop influential players, it’s about working as a team.”
  • Wigan Warriors v Castleford Tigers, Thurs 22nd April, DW Stadium, K.O. 6pm.

Harry Smith believes it will take a team effort to overcome the challenge of Castleford Tigers when the two sides meet on Thursday evening (K.O. 6pm).

Both clubs head into the Betfred Super League Round 4 clash with unbeaten records so far in 2021, with the fixture taking place at the DW Stadium.

Speaking about Thursday’s contest earlier this week, the scrum half explained that the Cherry and Whites are well aware of the threats that Daryl Powell’s side hold.

“We’re focusing on putting pressure on their top players. No one person can stop influential players, it’s about working as a team to get the job done.”

Smith has featured in all of Wigan’s four games in 2021 so far.

As one of the in-form sides so far of 2021, the Englishman explained how victory over the Tigers would send a message to the rest of the division.

“Beating them on Thursday would certainly be a big statement to the rest of Super League. Hopefully we can get the win.”

It’s been a big week for the 21 year-old, who signed a new four-year deal to remain with the Warriors until the end of the 2024 season.

On the contract Smith said: “I’m really pleased to get it done so that I can focus on working hard and doing my best for the team this year.

“I want to keep building on what I managed last year. I got a lot of bench spots so hopefully I can get a few more games starting and kick on from there.”

The deal was followed by the news that fellow half back Jackson Hastings has signed a deal with NRL outfit Wests Tigers from the 2022 season. (Learn more)

Smith discussed how playing alongside the likes of Hastings and veteran half back Tommy Leuluai has furthered his own game.

“There’s a lot you can learn from the likes of Jackson and Tommy. Whether it’s something I want to try or tips they have for me, they always offer an opinion and they are always honest with me.”
