Women’s match preview: Warrington

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of Wigan Warriors Women’s opening Betfred Women’s Super League clash against Warrington Wolves.

The Warriors make the short trip to Victoria Park, Warrington on Sunday lunchtime as they get their third season in the league competition underway (K.O. 12pm).

The Women’s game was halted before it began in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions, so this will be the first time both teams will take to the field for a competitive fixture in almost 18-months. The opposition, Warrington, are one of two new sides to the Betfred Women’s Super League this year after winning the Championship Grand Final in October 2019.

Coach quotes

Speaking to wiganwarriors.com, Women’s head coach Kris Ratcliffe stated that his team are more than ready for the new season to get underway.

“It’s been a long time coming! It’s just great for the game and the girls to be back up and running. Everyone is just really excited to get going.

“The lockdowns, although mentally challenging for everyone at times, have been really productive for us. We have worked hard on our fitness and individual skill, with hour after hour of work on Zoom. Dedicating time to the detail that can get overlooked during regular training sessions.

“The girls have really bought into what we have done and committed to doing their own stuff to support this. Coming back fitter than they ever have been.

“Warrington will be a tough challenge; they have waited a long time for this opportunity. They will be full of enthusiasm and will no doubt want to make a statement. We will need to match that enthusiasm and play smart, play to our strengths and hopefully we can come away with the win.”
