Adrian Lam praised the toughness of his side following their hard-fought victory over Leeds Rhinos on Thursday night.

Tries from Zak Hardaker, Jackson Hastings and a double from Liam Farrell ensured Wigan kept their 100% record in 2021 in tact.

Speaking to the media via zoom link shortly after the final whistle, the Papua New Guinean provided his thoughts on the result.

“I thought it was a really physical game. I’m really proud of the boys for hanging in there throughout the game, especially in those defensive periods and being able to then go up the other end and score some points.

Lam speaking to the media via Zoom link following the final whistle.

“That’s a sign of a good side and one that’s prepared to work hard for each other. I thought we defended really well and I always thought that two tries tonight would be enough based on that.”

Lam also explained why the nature of the victory was so important in light of Wigan’s upcoming fixtures.

“We know there’s still some improvement to be had there. We’ve also got a really tough period of rugby coming up, so the way tonight’s game panned out was exactly what we needed.”

With no shortage of individuals to praise, the head coach picked out a couple who he thought were particularly impressive.

Hardaker continued his try scoring run on Thursday, having contributed in each of the opening three rounds of the Betfred Super League so far.

“I thought Zak Hardaker was outstanding again. A few of our young ones were great and Jacko [Hastings] had some important touches in key parts of the game.

“Liam Farrell is becoming a bit of a try scoring machine, but he, along with a few others are still playing out of position, so I’m just pleased how they are going.”
