Head Coach Adrian Lam picked out Wigan’s defensive efforts as the most pleasing aspect of Friday’s 0-26 win over York City Knights.

The Cherry and Whites will now go into the hat for the Quarter Final draw, set to take place on Saturday at half time of the Catalans v Wakefield live on BBC Two.

Speaking to the media via zoom link following the full time whistle, the Papua New Guinean gave his immediate thoughts on the result.

“We were frustrated at times. We had ourselves to blame at times, there were lots of penalties and we made a lot of errors, putting ourselves under pressure.

Wigan travelled to the recently opened LNER Community Stadium to take on York.

“For positives, we are injury free and through to the quarter finals. Also, keeping York to nil was the big positive.”

Despite not posting a score in the 80 minutes, Lam praised the Championship opposition for their efforts.

“Lots of credit to York tonight. They were courageous and never gave up.”

Among the five tries for Wigan were the first senior scores for young backs Umyla Hanley and Sam Halsall. Speaking about their performance, Lam said: “It was always going to be difficult at times with a few changes in the team, but certainly very happy for those players to get their tries.”

Lam also highlighted the performances of two more senior pros.

“Zak Hardaker was outstanding, and Jackson [Hastings] was great too tonight. I’m sure he will run the ball even more as the season goes on.”
