Forward Liam Byrne says Wigan Warriors cannot be off the gas when they face Betfred Championship side York City Knights in the Third Round of the Betfred Challenge Cup on Friday.

Byrne, who has featured in both of Wigan’s league games so far this year, states his side must show York respect and put their best foot forward right from the get-go.

Speaking to Wigan TV this week, the 21-year-old said: “I think they are pretty tough opponents. They’ve got some good players and we can’t be complacent. We have to go into it all guns blazing and not hold anything back. It’s a good challenge.”

He added: “We will have a big focus on some of their individuals.”

Since making his debut for the Club in 2019, Irish international Byrne has enjoyed regular game time under head coach Adrian Lam – playing 27 games overall.

When asked about his goals for the 2021 season, he said: “I enjoy coming off the bench and like making that impact, but definitely a starting shirt is something I am striving for this year.”
