Oliver Gildart is aiming to hit the ground running in 2021 after an injury held back the centre last season.

After suffering a dislocated shoulder during the Great Britain autumn tour of New Zealand and Papua New Guinea in 2019, the 24-year-old missed a large chunk of the 2020 campaign in recovery.

Well into the cut and thrust of preparations for the 2021 season, Gildart spoke to Wigan TV about making the most of a full pre-season camp.

“They never get any easier [he joked]. My body has been in bits recently but that’s what it’s all about.

In 2020 Gildart made nine appearances, scoring five tries.

“I’ll be training as hard as I can so that I can be out there as much as possible this season.”

The Betfred Super League start date of 25th March has provided clubs with a longer pre-season period than in previous years, something that the Englishman feels is beneficial for all first team players.

“This is probably going to be the longest pre-season anyone has had. So the older boys have longer to get their bodies right and the younger ones get more time to develop as well.”

With the 2021 World Cup appearing in the distance, the Great Britain and England international highlighted that a place in the squad would be one of his targets over the coming season.

“Something I have always dreamed of doing is playing in a World Cup, but you’ve got to get your club game right first, and that’s what it’s all about.”
