Women’s team to hold trial day

Wigan Warriors Women have revealed the date for their trial session ahead of the 2021 Betfred Women’s Super League.

Launching as a team in 2018, the Warriors Women won the Women’s Super League in their inaugural season.

With no Women’s Rugby League being played in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Wigan team are now looking to recruit for the upcoming 2021 season.

The new campaign promises to be an exciting year for Women’s Rugby League with the competition offering a great opportunity for players to impress ahead of the upcoming Rugby League World Cup.

One trial session for the Warriors Women’s team is planned for Sunday 10th January 2021, taking place at Robin Park Arena from 10am until 1pm (registration to take place from 9:45am). The trial is open to anyone over the age of 18 who is interested in playing Rugby League or already plays the game.

Speaking ahead of the trials, Women’s head coach Kris Ratcliffe, said: “It’s been a challenging year for everyone in almost every sense. The one big thing to take away is that some things are out of our control – we learnt this pretty early on and focused on improving what we could.

“As head coach, I have three driving goals for this team – good people, good athletes and good rugby players. We’ve done a solid bit of work on those first two and together they massively contribute to the third. So, with these trials that’s exactly what we’re looking for – good honest athletes.

“We have had great success with previous trials in unearthing new talent, including crossover talent from other sports such as rugby union, hockey, netball and athletics. It doesn’t really matter if someone hasn’t played much Rugby League before – whatever your skill we would love to see you come and trial.

“If you fancy giving it your best shot, come along and try out. It’s a great time to be involved in Rugby League with the World Cup just around the corner and being hosted on home soil.”

Wigan Women’s captain and community coach, Rachel Thompson, added: “I’ve always loved the trial stages of the year. We’ve had so many talented players come over the years and the best bit about this is that some of them had never even picked up a rugby ball before!

“We’ve had a variety of people come to trial, who have been attracted by the pull of the Wigan brand or just to give it a go, and some of those have gone on to become some of our most valuable players – or even just crazy Wigan fans like myself – we’ve had the range.

“To anyone even just thinking about it, I’d say give it a go as you’ve got absolutely nothing to lose but maybe a whole lot to gain, including lifelong friends, new skills, new experiences, new challenges and the potential to wear that famous Cherry and White jersey. It doesn’t get much better than that!”
