French: Perfect ending

Bevan French believes a victory in Friday’s Grand Final would be the ‘perfect ending’ to a successful first full season with Wigan.

In the last two weeks, the dazzling full back was shortlisted for the 2020 Man of Steel, named in the Dream Team and helped his side pick up the League Leaders’ Shield.

Speaking to the media via zoom ahead of the crucial derby clash with St Helens, French discussed facing the Warriors’ rivals.

“It’s a crazy atmosphere, even without the crowd there. It’s good to be a part of. Coming from Australia, I didn’t quite know just how much it means to people, it means an awful lot to them.

“It’s obviously going to be a high-intensity game because of those reasons, but it should be anyway because of the standard of players involved.”

The 24-year-old also highlighted the different mood around the game as he approaches his first major Final.

“It’s my first Grand Final at the top level and it’s already had a different feel about it.

“Everyone is enjoying themselves at training. It’s really great to be a part of, not just the game but the week leading up to it.”

Despite having had such a good 2020 personally, the Australian still believes that picking up the Super League trophy on Friday night would be the crowning achievement.

“I feel pretty honoured to have achieved what I have so far this season.

“To go on and win the competition this weekend would be the perfect ending to it.”

Adrian Lam has also enjoyed a season of successes with Wigan, both personally and with the Club.

Having picked up the 2020 Coach of the Year Award, French highlighted what the Papua New Guinean had done for him on the training field.

“There’s certain things in certain parts of the field that he’s helped me with, particularly positioning.

“Mostly though, it’s the confidence he’s put in me, to let me do whatever I want and go wherever I want.

“The more I get on the ball, the more confidence I have. He’s helped me with lots of little things, but confidence is the big one.”

Lachlan Coote – French’s opposite number on Friday night – has also had a great season individually. The full back joined the Wigan No.6 in the Man of Steel shortlist after second impressive season for Saints.

Discussing facing the Scotland international, French said: “I remember still being in high school watching him playing. He was in contention for a reason. His execution and influence on other players, his decision making and percentages in picking the right pass is something very few people can do.

“His organisation skills in defence too. They are good defensively because of what he does.

“He also knows where to put his kicks. He’s an all-round player really.”
