  • Full time: Wigan Warriors 19-6 Huddersfield Giants.

Wigan Warriors sealed first place and the League Leaders’ Shield with a hard fought win over Huddersfield Giants on Friday night.

Tries from Sam Powell, Jackson Hastings and Zak Hardaker guided Adrian Lam’s side to their first top of the table finish since 2012.

Wigan will now head into the Play-Offs in pole position, with their next game in two weeks’ time.

The Warriors drew first blood in the fifth minute through Powell. A knock on from Innes Senior gifted Wigan possession inside the Huddersfield 20. In vintage Powell fashion, the hooker ran from dummy-half to score under the posts.

Despite a number of chances for Lam’s men, it was the Giants who made the next score of the game in the 38th through Sam Wood. The Huddersfield back snatched a fumble from Bevan French to run clear and score.

It took over 20 minutes after the break for the next score to occur, with the points going the way of Wigan. A good spell of pressure saw the Warriors build repeat sets deep in the Giants half. Hastings caught the Huddersfield line napping, running from dummy-half to score his ninth try of the Betfred Super League season.

In contrast to the last, it took the Cherry and Whites just three more minutes to grab their third of the game through Hardaker. Hastings turned creator, kicking a tasty grubber for the centre to collect and touch down in the 64th.

Hastings put the result beyond doubt in the 77th with a successful drop goal attempt to wrap up the 2020 League Leaders’ Shield for the Warriors.
