Head Coach Adrian Lam dedicated Wigan’s League Leaders’ Shield triumph to the Club’s fans after their win over Huddersfield on Friday evening.

The Warriors went into their last game of the regular season knowing a win would secure the Shield, while a defeat would hand it to St Helens.

Speaking to the media after the game via Zoom, the Papua New Guinean discussed the hard-fought nature of the win.

Adrian Lam speaking to the media via Zoom post-match.

“They [Huddersfield] have been a consistent side all year, and in the games that they’ve lost it has never been by much.

“We knew we’d have to be prepared to fight for the full 80 minutes to get a result tonight, and right through to the second half I think we did that tonight.”

The game looked to be going down to the wire, when the two sides went in at the break 6-6. However, tries from Zak Hardaker and Jackson Hastings in the second half proved too much for the Giants.

On approaching the second half, Lam said: “There were a few nerves there at half time, but that was good because they all wanted that silverware and to be rewarded for the hard work in a difficult year.

“I think it’s an acknowledgement of the consistency throughout the year. I’m really proud of the group for making sure we got through.”

The Head Coach also gave a special mention to the Wigan fans, who have been unable to attend games since March.

“Although they can’t be with us, we are playing for the fans every week and we can’t wait to be back playing in front of them to share this with them.”

The Warriors now get a week off to prepare for their Betfred Super League Play-Off Semi Final in two weeks’ time.

On approaching the next game, Lam noted some of the players who may return.

“Sean O’Loughlin and Dom Manfredi will come back into the picture for that game. There’s going to have to be some tough decisions to be made.

“On top of the 17 tonight, there’s also Harry Smith, but we haven’t been in this position since my time here so it’s a nice position to be in.”
