Farrell: 80 minute performance

  • Liam Farrell reflects on Wigan’s 58-12 victory over Salford Red Devils.
  • The 30-year-old talks about his two tries, the brilliance of Bevan French and attacking quality in the squad.
  • Farrell: “The score shows that we played for 80 minutes, which is the mentality we want for rest of the season.”

Liam Farrell says Wigan’s 58-12 victory over Salford showed the strength of his team’s mentality.

Adrian Lam’s side put in one of their stand-out performances of the season, as they looked to solidify their place in the Betfred Super League top four.

Farrell was pleased with how the Warriors picked up from where they left off against Warrington two weeks ago.

He said: “We wanted to carry on the mentality from the Warrington performance, and I think we pretty much did that. We started well and it just continued throughout the entire game. The score shows that we played for 80 minutes, which is the mentality we want for rest of the season.”

Farrell was happy with how his side continued the mentality from their previous game.

The second-row went over twice in the victory – seeing him move into double figures ten tries in 17 games in 2020 so far.

“Quite a few people got over, so I was fortunate enough to bag another two. I think I’m living off the joy of having a really good half-back in Jackson (Hastings). We have a lot of attacking threats, which is pleasing to have.”

Following Bevan French’s hat-trick, Farrell had a lot of praise for his teammate and ranks him as one of the best players he’s played with.

“A lot of teams are worried about Bevan (French), and I think you can see why. He was unbelievable, you don’t know what he is going to do. I’ve never played with a player like him, just through pure speed, if you give him open space then you’ve got no chance.”

Farrell also cited the importance of Sam Powell, with the hooker also grabbing a brace on Friday night.

“He’s going really well. Teams must know what he is doing, but no one can seem to stop him at the minute. He’s a great asset to us and hopefully he can continue that.”

Farrell going over for his first of two tries on Friday night.

After Salford’s Coral Challenge Cup final defeat at Wembley last weekend, Farrell knew it would be something that could take its toll on the opposition.

“We spoke about how hard it is to back up a Challenge Cup final, with both the physical and emotional energy, so we knew it would be tough for them with the way we showed up. I think Salford caught us at the wrong time.”

With St Helens up next for Wigan, the forward shared his excitement for the derby and believes it is poised to be a great game.

“It’ll be a tough one, derby games are always the same, it will be whoever does the simple stuff the best. I’ve played in a lot of them and both teams are travelling well, so it should make for a really good game. I am really looking forward to it.”
