Farrell: Setting standards

  • Liam Farrell reflects on Wigan’s win over Warrington on Friday night.
  • The 30-year-old talks about his winning try, stresses the importance of continuing to improve and looks ahead to Thursday’s game against Catalans.
  • Farrell: “I thought that a desire to win was there in a lot of ways and it was pleasing that we got the win in the end.”

Liam Farrell believes Friday’s win over Warrington Wolves has laid a benchmark for the Wigan Warriors squad heading into the back end of the season.

The second-row went over for a 76th-minute winner at Emerald Headingley Stadium, as the Warriors move up to second in the Betfred Super League table with a 14-18 win.

Farrell said: “We set some standards for ourselves after the Semi Final defeat. We just wanted to make sure that we turned up for each other, doing all the small things right and that the energy from 1-17 was there.

“I thought that a desire to win was there in a lot of ways. Even though we didn’t start in the way we wanted, we still stuck in for each other and it was pleasing that we got the win in the end.

Farrell scored Wigan’s winning try against Warrington on Friday night.

“Even though it was a good victory, there are a few errors we want to fix up. We had some chances earlier in the game to put it to bed and we didn’t, so that could’ve made the game a bit easier.

“We need to make sure we maintain our form because we have a massive game coming up which is just as important, and we have to do all of the small things again.”

The 30-year-old forward stated his praise for a younger member of the squad, who was behind the move that opened up the space for the winning try.

“It is something that we do quite a lot on our edge – Harry Smith has been coming on and doing a really good job. It was his call to run through the play, which worked out to be great and opened straight up for me.”

Despite Farrell’s 75th-minute try putting Wigan ahead for the first time in the game on Friday night, he admits there was confidence within the team that they could come away with the win.

“Even though we were down for a long time, we knew we had a really good chance of winning. In our own heads we felt that we would come out on top because we were winning the energy battle and we wanted it more than they did.

“The second half was a real Play Off style of rugby, going backwards and forwards, before they eventually cracked.”

The games keep coming thick and fast for Adrian Lam’s side, as they go up against Catalans Dragons at the Halliwell Jones Stadium (K.O. 5:30pm) on Thursday night.

Farrell said: “They have been going really well. It was a tough game when we went over there but we got the job done.

“We are still expecting a team with class all over the field. With their style of play, we have to match them in the energy battle which will give us a chance.

“It’s a very tough game but it could be a big win for us that puts us in a comfortable spot in the top four.”
