2016 season: In stats

After concluding our rewind to the 2016 season on Wigan TV this week, Club Historian Keith Sutch provides all the key stats and facts from the year the Warriors won the Super League title for the fourth time. 

General facts

  • Shaun Wane was the Head Coach 
Shaun Wane led Wigan to a second Grand Final in three years.
  • Sean O’Loughlin was the club captain 
  • Wigan won the Super League Grand Final for the fourth time – beating Warrington 6-12 at Old Trafford 
    • Oliver Gildart and Josh Charnley scored the two tries
    • Liam Farrell was named the Harry Sunderland Trophy winner

  • Four hat-tricks were scored during the season 
    • Josh Charnley scored two, while Dom Manfredi and Anthony Gelling got one each
  • Wigan’s biggest win came against Wakefield on 5th August – a 60-12 thumping in the first round of the old Super 8s at the DW Stadium 
    • George Williams and Sam Tomkins scored two tries each, while Sam Powell, Josh Charnley, John Bateman, Oliver Gildart, Dom Manfredi, Dan Sarginson and Matty Smith all went over for one each
  • Wigan thrashed Leeds 40-8 at the Magic Weekend which was played at St James’ Park in Newcastle 
  • Sam Powell was the only ever-present in the Wigan team – featuring in all 32 games in the league and Play-Offs
  • Dom Manfredi was named in the Super League Dream Team

  • Wigan’s top goalscorer was Matty Smith with a total of 98 goals (89 goals and nine drop-goals – Wigan record for amount of drop-goals in a season)
