Over the next few weeks we will take a look back at Wigan Warriors best matches ‘on this day’ from the last few years.
On this day (12th May 2012) the Warriors beat St Helens 18-4 at the DW Stadium.
Sam Tomkins, Sean O’Loughlin and Brett Finch were all on the scoresheet as Wigan progressed to the Semi-Final stage of the Challenge Cup.
It was the visitors who took an early lead, as Paul Wellens went over after four minutes to put Saints 0-4 ahead.
Wigan soon responded though as Tomkins darted past the opposition to score a superb try. Josh Charnley added the extras from the conversion to edge his side ahead.
That lead was extended in the 20th-minute as the space opened up for O’Loughlin to go over.
Neither side were able to grab any more tries in a hard fought first half, as Wigan went into the changing rooms 12-4 ahead.
Nine minutes after the break, Finch strengthen the Warriors lead with an excellent run to the line.
That secured a derby win and progression to the next round of the competition.
