Warriors head coach praises the effort in side’s 14-6 defeat to St Helens

Wigan now prepare to host Catalans Dragons next Friday

Shaun Wane said the best team won as Wigan fell to a 14-6 derby day defeat to St Helens in the Betfred Super League on Thursday evening.

Wigan struggled to get a foothold in the game, with St Helens punishing the Warriors after capitalising on a mistake in the 10th minute. The visitors held an 8-0 lead at the half time hooter before added a converted try after the break, Sam Tomkins got his 200th career try in the 70th minute but it proved nothing but a consolation.

On the game: “I have no complaints with the result, I thought the best team won without a shadow of a doubt. I thought they had the majority of the game. I was really proud of our efforts though. It was a Wigan and Saints derby, they got stuck into each other as you’d expect and it’s the sign of a good battle.”

“There was no real detail with our attack and we didn’t put them under enough pressure. Our end of set quality, at really important times of the game, was poor. There were times when I thought we had them but our last plays let us down.” He added: “Overall, if Rom (Romain Navarrete) or Sarge (Dan Sarginson) had scored their chances then we could’ve been looking at a different outcome but I think Saints were the better team.”

The Head Coach admitted he had a number of bodies missing in training this week. On the squad, he said: “Sam Powell hasn’t trained all week, Joe Greenwood hasn’t ran since he got injured but we’ve had to rush him back because we’ve got our 41 playing today whose only joined us in the last few days. It was needs must out there tonight.” “Overall, I’m okay, I can’t stand losing to St Helens, it hurts me badly but I’m alright with this one. Our effort was good and looking at the big picture, we never gave in, we pushed until the end.”

“They’re a good team, they’re flying and they are very confident. They had a few out as well, they were a bit busted too and had some big players missing so let’s be real about that.”
