Two Best Teams

Two Best Teams

  • Darrell Goulding can’t wait for 2017 Academy Grand Final

  • Warriors Under-19s coach says it is fitting that the two top teams play each other

  • Wigan U19s face Castleford U19s at the DW Stadium on Sunday, 2pm kick-0ff with entry £5/£3

Darrell Goulding says it is fitting that the two best teams in the competition will go head to head when Wigan face Castleford in the 2017 Academy Grand Final at the DW Stadium on Sunday.

Having finished top of the table, the Warriors will host the second placed Tigers in the showpiece finale.

Speaking to Wigan TV ahead of the game, the Under-19s Head Coach said: “I think it’s the right thing that we’re playing Castleford. It’s the two teams that have been the best all year.

“I know there’s a lot of talk about play-offs and so on but this is what we want, the two best teams playing each other. Castleford play a good style of rugby, they play very similar to the First Team. We’ve got the better of them twice this year but in all fairness they’ve probably had a few players missing for those games so I think it’s a 50:50 game really.”

As much as Goulding wants his team to win he says watching his players on the big stage will be particularly interesting.

“Everybody has been talking about it this week and the lads are definitely excited as are the staff and everyone who has been involved in the Academy this year. There’s been a lot of hard work done this year and this is the exciting time now.

“I think from the lads’ point of view they want to win and from the staff’s point of view we want to win especially after last year but I think it’s probably more interesting to see how the lads respond to playing on the big stage because this game will get them more prepared for when they hopefully go on into the First Team.”

“It means a lot (to play at the DW Stadium) and it’s even the little things, like the players being able to use the First Team car park and going in through the same entrance and things like that. It’s a big reward for the year that they’ve had and I also think it’s special for the fans to have it at home again.”
