Ganson Excited for Derby

  • Dom Manfredi poised to return to action for the Reserves after 12 months on the sidelines

Young hooker Josh Ganson says he loves playing against local rivals St Helens, no matter what level it’s at ahead of the Reserves game with the Saints.

The Warriors were defeated 32-12 at the Robin Park Arena by neighbours Saints in March, with Ganson starting that day.

However, Darrell Goulding’s Under-19s side have done the double over St Helens this season and Ganson says the derby is the fixture everyone gets excited about the most.

“I love playing in these derby games,” the 19-year-old said. “They are always the most physical and the ones when you have got to really stand up.

“As an Under-19s side, we have gone really well this year but it will be a step up for some of the lads who have been playing in the Under-19s so they can test themselves against some of the bigger bodies in what will be a good Saints Reserves team.

“I think Adam Swift could play for Saints and Matty Lees and Ricky Bailey are good players as well for them. It looks like Tommy Lee is going to start so as a nine so myself, it will be good to come up against him.”

Warriors winger Dom Manfredi, who has scored 47 tries in 51 Super League games, is set to return for the Reserves after severely injuring his knee ligaments exactly 365 days ago.

On Manfredi playing for the Reserves, England Academy captain Ganson said: “Dom will be massive for us on Saturday.

“He has got a lot of experience and we all know how good Dom is as a player and he has shown his class in training again as he is getting back to full fitness.

“This is a good example of why we want more clubs to buy into the Reserves grade because it is a chance for a First Team player who has been out for 12 months now to actually see where he is at so it will be good for him to get back out on the field and hopefully we can get the win for him as well.”

The match takes place at the Totally Wicked Stadium, St Helens, kicking-off at 2:30pm.

Admission for the game is £3 Adults and £1 Concessions.
