  • ”I am more than happy with the two points!” Darrell Goulding

Under-19’s Head Coach Darrell Goulding declared himself more than happy to take the two points after beating top of the table Castleford Tigers.

Wigan scored two through Liam Paisley and Paddy Casey but Declan Sheehan brought Cas back into the game. Josh Woods scored late in the first-half which saw the Warriors 18-4 to the good at half-time.

Sammy Kibula stretched Wigan’s lead in the second-half but the Tigers clawed two tries back through Matt Diskin and Jake Trueman. Sam Grant popped up with one for the Warriors but Castleford stuck in the game, with Robbie Storey scoring. Grant grabbed his second late on but so did Cas, with Wigan hanging on for a 34-26 victory.

Speaking after the game, the Warriors Coach said: “It was very good to get two points against a team who are top of the league in Castleford.

“There were a couple of nice tries from us. We had nice plays with Gans [Josh Ganson] when Granty [Sam Grant] scored in the corner. I think it was our tough stuff earlier in the game that really stretched our lead although I do think we went away from that a little bit in the second-half.

“We have beaten the top of the league team at their ground and we came up against some adversity. We weren’t quite happy with how we performed in the second-half because we let them get back into the game.

“We had two tries disallowed as well and some decisions didn’t go our way but I’m more than happy with the two points and showing what we’re about.”

Goulding praised First Team squad players Josh Ganson, Callum Field and Caine Barnes after the highly rated trio put in stand-out performances.

The 29-year-old coach added: “The First Team lads were a big bonus for us. Josh Ganson, Cal Field and Caine Barnes all coming down from the first grade were our top performers and they gave us a real lift through the middle and I thought Gans was outstanding from the beginning.

“Harry Smith and Josh Woods looked good together in the halves but they have a few things to learn from the Castleford game but they are showing some good signs.”
