  • Romain Navarrete happy to be in the Wigan team

  • Young prop speaks about debut against Warrington

  • French international hoping to keep place in the Wigan team ahead of his parents visiting the UK

Romain Navarrete says he’s happy to be in the Wigan team and hoping to maintain his place ahead of a visit from his parents!

The close-season signing from Catalans made his Wigan debut off the bench in last week’s win at Warrington and admitted the call-up came as a bit of a shock.

“It was a big surprise, I didn’t know during the week. I didn’t think I would play but when Shaun (Wane) told me I was very happy.” He said.

“It was the day before at the Captain’s Run when he told me. He called me into his office and told me that I would play so I was very happy.

“We had a meeting after that so I called my mum and dad straight after that and told them that I would play. They were very happy for me and all of my family watched the game at home.”

The young French international maintained his place in the Wigan squad for Sunday’s game against Huddersfield and admitted he’d love to play again, especially with his parents due in the UK next week.

“I went back to France (after Warrington) to see my family so I was happy that Shaun gave us time off for that.

“My parents are coming next week for the game against Hull FC so I hope to play in that game.”

Navarrete joined Wigan from Catalans after making 11 appearances last year

Navarrete says he’s liking his time at Wigan so far, helped a little by a friend from the other side of Billinge Hill.

“I’m enjoying it here, we have good weather!” He smiled.

“The players are good with me and I have some French friends around here, on the day off I see them, I like it here.

“I meet with the other French players once per week or every two weeks. I see Theo (Fages) every day, he’s like my best friend. I played with Theo maybe five or six years ago so we’ve been friends since then, he lives near to me in Billinge.”
