Wigan Warriors U19s continued their undefeated start to the 2018 season as they nicked a 12-18 victory against Widnes Vikings U19s at the Select Security Stadium on Saturday.
Both sides scored three tries apiece but it was Harry Smith’s goal kicking that gave the Warriors the win. A Joe Brown brace and a Samy Kibula late try alongside Smith’s three conversations gave Wigan the two points.
Darrell Goulding made three changes to the side that beat City of Hull Academy last time out as Reece Hamlett, Aiden Roden and Liam Byrne were all out. Amir Bourouh, Ethan Havard and Joseph Purcell all came in.
The Warriors struck first with a Joe Brown try. Sam Grant found a gap in the Widnes defence and he was able to find the supporting Brown who eased over the line. Harry Smith converted the try in front of the posts and Wigan led 0-6 with just a minute on the clock.
Widnes responded eight minutes later as Oliver Brookes went over on the left side. The Vikings switched play and a string of passes allowed Brookes to touch down in the corner. Lloyd Roby missed the kick and Wigan were still in front at 4-6.
The home side took the lead on the 16th minute as Owen Buckley scored a carbon copy of his side’s first try. Widnes got the ball on the left side and a well-worked move was capped off with Buckley darting over the whitewash. Roby could not convert but the Vikings were 8-6 ahead.
After giving away a penalty, Widnes’ Keanan Brand had something to say to the referee and was duly sin binned seconds later.
Despite that, Widnes furthered their lead on the stroke of half time as Jayden Hatton went over on the right side. The centre managed to get the ball down over the line despite the best efforts of two Wigan defenders. Roby missed his third kick of the game but the hosts went 12-6 up at the break.
The young Cherry and Whites levelled the score with just 13 minutes remaining as Joe Brown got his second of the game. A fine break through the line by Joe Shorrocks opened up space in the Widnes defence and he found Smith who assisted Brown to go over in front of the posts. Smith’s goal made it 12-12.
With just four minutes to go, substitute Sam Kibula made an instant impact and scored the winning try for the Warriors. The prop collected a short pass on the Widnes line and touched down with ease. Smith sealed the victory with the goal and Wigan had sneaked the win.
