Well we’re five from five and it’s fair to say we’ve started quite well. We’re happy with where we’re at right now but know that there’s still plenty of room for improvement.
The win over Leeds was a good one for us, the first half wasn’t our best work but we managed to take a lot of energy out of Leeds because we had so much ball. In the second half they made a few errors and we held on to the ball better and put some points on them. Our back five were real good and laid a great platform for the rest of the team.
Looking at the stats after the game and Charners (Josh Charnley) made 222 metres which is some effort! He’s had a great start to the season, both him and Dom (Manfredi) are doing great things for us. I also thought Sargy (Dan Sarginson) was real good at full back, he slotted in there well so it was a good team performance.
We had a meeting today and still feel that we’re only at about 70%, our line-speed and pressure can improve so we’ll keep working on that.
Onto Widnes this week and they’re going to be a big test for us. They’re going really well so far, Kev Brown, Joe Mellor and Rhys Hanbury are flying. They’re throwing the ball around a lot and are scoring some great tries so our defence will need to be strong this week. They really did a job on Hull last week and look a good team this year.
I know it’s a cliché but we do only take one game at a time, that said I can’t finish this blog without mentioning the Good Friday game at Saints. It’s always the game you look out for on the calendar and it’s special to play in a Wigan-Saints derby whether it’s at home, away or somewhere else. It’s always an amazing feeling to see so many Wigan fans in the away end when we run out there at Langtree Park. Saints have started well and it promises to be another great game, you don’t want to miss that one.
See you soon,
